- With these room filling drawings I try to create a new type of space and thereby interpret the original architecture and history of the site. The image takes embedded qualities of the given environment and uses them to make something new: a space within the space with its own distinct experience.

I have talked about embodiment, space and time. I have spoken the art speak. I said: Space. Space. Space. Now I wonder. The room is the mould that shapes the drawing and holds it into place. If audible space would be the mould, what form will it take on?

In audible space walls become porous. The shape of the room becomes fluid. When I am making a wall drawing I stay very close to the surface of the wall. To see what I am actually making and have a view of the whole, I need to step back, take distance. How do you take distance when you work in auditory space? Can you step out to see the whole? When you walk through a city, you don’t look at the whole, but from within. Sound travels and intermingles. You see fragments, pieces. An image can be seen or pass you by. Glimpses dissolve into a rhythmic pulse.

In a series of artist books and folded drawings I searched for a more fluid form of working wherein appearing and disappearing could alternate. The process-based development of my residency will be made visible in a publication. This book, Een vogel vliegt op, came into being thanks to a collaboration between FLACC and Posture Editions. It will be launched on May 9th at 019 (Gent). The launch will coincide with a presentation of the original drawings and a video screening. The screening will take place from 11h till 18h at 019 and be simultaneously presented on-line as a website launched that same day.
