MARK KENT IN GENK
Nog tot eind april staat op het binnenplein van het kantoorgebouw op C-Mine de modulaire sculptuur ‘Industrial Sound Recordings from Gemaal’ van de Ierse kunstenaar Mark Kent (1972, Cork, Ierland). De kunstenaar ontwerpt het werk op basis van geluidscoördinaten die hij registreert op verschillende sites in de Euregio. Kent houdt fanatiek de coördinaten bij die hem omringen en ontwerpt er abstracte patronen mee. De ontwerpen worden doorgaans ruimtelijk gepresenteerd in de vorm van muurtekeningen of geprint op canvas, behangpapier en textiel. Voor FLACC waagt de kunstenaar zich aan het ontwerp van een driedimensionaal patroon. Het resultaat is een modulair monument dat rondreist in de euregio en in een wisselende vorm, conform de respectievelijke geluidsopnames, wordt gemonteerd. Eerder dit voorjaar stond het werk opgesteld in AINCI Maastricht, IKOB Eupen en de Kraftcentrale in Alsdorf. Een stuk van de installatie reist nadien ook door naar Buro Leeuwarden, Nederland. Het project is gecoördineerd door FLACC in het kader van Gemaal, een Euregionale culturele samenwerking tussen de steden Genk, Eupen, Maastricht en Alsdorf, ondersteund door de Europese Gemeenschap (Interreg III).
KINDERKUNSTENFABRIEK 2008
De Kinderkunstenfabriek is een jaarlijks project van het Cultuurcentrum Genk en FLACC. Het is ontstaan in 2001 als een speerpuntproject met als hoofddoelstelling de verhoging van culturele en educatieve participatie van kansarme kinderen en jongeren. In de Kinderkunstenfabriek gaan een tiental kunstenaars vanuit hun eigen artistieke praktijk een week aan de slag met een groep kinderen. Dit jaar hanteren de kunstenaars een aanpak die binnendringt in de eigen omgeving en de dagelijkse realiteit van de kinderen. Ze kunnen op een erg radicale en directe manier een spiegel voorhouden maar zich ook op een discrete, subtiele manier nestelen in onze alledaagsheid. De creatie van een kunstwerk is ook dit jaar niet het vooropgezette doel maar wel een middel om te spreken, denken en leren over kunst en leven. De achtste editie vond plaats van 31 maart tot en met 5 april 2008. De deelnemende kunstenaars zijn Mike Carremans, Jo Foulon, HAP (Jens De Schutter, Wim Waelput en Piet Mertens), Jan Mast, Hilke Muyldermans, Helena Sidiropoulos, Jochem Vanden Ecker, Frederik Van Simaey, Tom Vansant, Micha Volders en Lotte Vanhamel. De videoregistratie van ‘Metallica’, de performance die Jimmy Robert vorig jaar ontwikkelde in FLACC, maakt deel uit van de solotentoonstelling ‘Légèrement manipulés’ in CAC Brétigny, Frankrijk die loopt van 20 april tot en met 14 juni 2008. Een live performance van ‘Metallica’ staat gepland op de tentoonstelling ‘Elegantly wasted’, die plaatsvindt in NAK, Duitsland van 11 mei tot 6 juli 2008. De performance ‘(seismographic fabrics) tremella mesenterica’ door Building Transmissions & Jean Martens die plaatsvond op Open Huis FLACC op 26 januari werd uitgegeven op elpee. De editie en de installatie ‘seismographic fabrics’ (Kris Delacourt, Nico Dockx, Jean Martens en Jochem Vanden Ecker) werd op 6 april 2008 gepresenteerd in Kunstverein Hannover, Duitsland. De installatie Permanent Revolution van Sue de Beer, waarvan de film in 2007 werd opgenomen in FLACC, staat nog tot 25 mei tentoongesteld in het MuHKA, Antwerpen . De kroonluchtersculptuur die Anne Wenzel in FLACC produceerde staat nog tot 8 juni op de expo ‘This is what you want…this is what you get’ in het Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch, Nederland.

‘Tussen Woord en Beeld’ is een lezingenreeks in FLACC, georganiseerd in het kader van een onderzoeksproject uitgevoerd door de afdeling Grafisch Ontwerp van de Media en Design Academie Genk en het Instituut voor Onderzoek in de Kunsten van de Associatie K.U.Leuven.

RECEPTIEVE WERKING
Momenteel ontwikkelt Romain Bailly in FLACC een aantal omvangrijke sculpturen. Samen met danschoreografe Sacha Steenks werkt Kim Rikken aan een film en installatie. Ook maken Maria Blondeel, Frank Castelyns, Marc De Boever, Arnaud De Wolf, Alice Evermore, Evelien Gysen, Ben Hansen, Gregory Maass en Nayoung Kim, Yves Maes, Sarah Michielsen, Lieven Paelinck, Silke Sarens, Stefan Serneels, Stefan Tavernier, Filip Van Dingenen en Sarah Van Marcke gebruik van de FLACC-faciliteiten.

MARK KENT IN GENK
The modular sculpture ‘Industrial Sound Recordings from Gemaal’ by the Irish artist Mark Kent (1972, Cork, Ireland) will be in the inner court of the office building at C-Mine until the end of April. The artist creates the work based on sound coordinates he registers at various locations in the Euregion. Kent relentlessly stores the coordinates surrounding him and applies them to his designs. These patterns are mainly presented in three-dimensional forms such as mural paintings or in prints on canvas, wallpaper and textiles. For FLACC the artist ventured to create a three-dimensional pattern. The result was a modular monument that has been travelling around in the Euregion and has been assembled in various forms depending on the respective sound recordings. Earlier this spring the work was exhibited in AINCI Maastricht, IKOB Eupen and the Kraftzentrale in Alsdorf. A component of the installation will travel later on to Buro Leeuwarden, in the Netherlands. The project has been co-ordinated by FLACC within the framework of Gemaal, a cultural collaboration in the Euregion between the cities of Genk, Eupen, Maastricht en Alsdorf, and is financially supported by the European Community (Interreg III).
CHILDREN'S ART FACTORY 2008
The Children's Art Factory is a project that is organised by Cultuurcentrum Genk and FLACC every year. This spearhead project was created in 2001 mainly aiming at an increased participation in art forms by underprivileged children and youngsters. Starting from their own artistic practice, a dozen artists work with a group of children in the Children's Art Factory for one week. This year the artists use an approach that enters into the children’s' own surroundings and daily reality. They may hold a mirror up in a very radical and direct way, or may lodge in our daily lives in a discrete and subtle manner. As usual, it will not be the preconceived purpose to create a work of art, but a means to speak, think and learn about art and living. The eight edition took place from 31 March to 5 April 2008. The video registration of ‘Metallica’, the performance Jimmy Robert developed in FLACC last year, forms part of the solo exhibition ‘Légèrement manipulés’ in CAC Brétigny, France, which runs from 20 April to 14 June 2008. There is to be a live performance of ‘Metallica’ during the exhibition ‘Elegantly wasted’, which takes place in NAK, Germany from 11 May until 6 July 2008. The performance ‘(seismographic fabrics) tremella mesenterica’ by Building Transmissions & Jean Martens, which took place during the FLACC Open House on 26 January is now available on record. The edition and the installation ‘seismographic fabrics’ (Kris Delacourt, Nico Dockx, Jean Martens and Jochem Vanden Ecker) was presented in Kunstverein Hannover on 6 April 2008, Germany. ‘Tussen Woord en Beeld' (between word and image) is a series of lectures in FLACC, organised as part of a research project carried out by the Department of Graphical Media Design and Design Academie Genk, together with the Instituut voor Onderzoek in de Kunsten of the Association K.U. Leuven.

At the moment Romain Bailly is creating a number of large sculptures in FLACC. Together with dance choreographer Sacha Steenks Kim Rikken is producing a movie and installation.
