Een nieuw huis voor FLACC en CIAP

De komende jaren gaan CIAP (Hasselt) en FLACC gezamenlijk bouwen aan een nieuwe toekomst op C-mine (Genk) met een nieuwe infrastructuur, waarin de twee organisaties hun plek gaan vinden. C-mine is een voormalige mijnbouwsite die in 2010 werd gerenoveerd en is vandaag een dynamische plek voor cultuur, kunst, architectuur, onderwijs, wetenschap, onderzoek en technologie. Hier zullen beide organisaties de komende jaren vanuit een sterke samenwerking een nieuwe infrastructuur bouwen en dat bouwen mag u zeer letterlijk nemen. CIAP, FLACC en Stad Genk zijn dan ook verheugd te mogen meedelen dat de architectenbureau’s 51n4e (Brussel) en Point Supreme (Athene) het winnende ontwerp hebben ingediend. Het Belgisch-Griekse duo wist de jury te overtuigen met een ontwerp bestaande uit 4 duurzame gebouwen die een flexibele en innovatieve manier van werken stimuleren. Het voorstel incorporeert de eigenheid van de site, maar doet eveneens gewaagde uitspraken over de toekomst. De nieuwbouw wordt een thuis voor kunstenaars, in residentie of op bezoek, op de vooravond van een doorbraak of reeds met bakken ervaring, met de noodzaak tot braakliggen of het verlangen om te produceren, reflecteren of experimenteren. Hopelijk wordt het ook een plek waar u zich thuis zal voelen. De geschatte oplevering wordt momenteel in het voorjaar van 2023 gepland.

Op zaterdag 5 oktober opent de tentoonstelling Incendio van Antonio Vega Macotela bij CIAP (Hasselt). Het project en de presentatie zijn een samenwerking tussen CIAP en FLACC en maken deel uit van de Stadstriënnale Hasselt-Genk. Incendio is een nieuw hoofdstuk in een langlopend project The Q’aquchas Ballade van Antonio Vega Macotela, waarin de figuur van een ‘hacker’ als een agent van politieke en sociale ontwrichting wordt onderzocht, in tijden waarin informatie de meest waardevolle bron is.

De serie wandtapijten die in CIAP te zien zijn, trekt een parallel tussen de hackersgroep Nos del Abismo en de Q’aquchas, een bende piratenmijnwerkers, die in de 18e eeuw de Boliviaanse mijnen geëxploiteerd hebben, wanneer de legitieme mijnwerkers verplicht waren om te rusten. Hetzij het delven van zilver of van data, beide groepen gebruiken met succes achterpoortjes om de bestaande machtsstructuren te ondermijnen en het systeem te ‘hacken’.

Antonio Vega Macotela (°1980) is een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar gevestigd tussen Mexico en Amsterdam, wiens werken reeds internationaal werden tentoongesteld, onlangs tijdens Documenta 14 in Kassel, en in het Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, VS.

A new house for FLACC and CIAP

In the coming years, CIAP (Hasselt) and FLACC aim to jointly build a new future on the C-mine site (Genk) with a new infrastructure that is to become the home for both organisations. C-mine is a former mining site that was renovated in 2010; today it is a dynamic place for culture, art, architecture, education, science, research and technology. It is in this location and on the basis of a strong level of cooperation that both organisations will build – and the term building can be taken quite literally in this instance – their new infrastructure in the coming years. CIAP, FLACC and the City of Genk are therefore pleased to announce that the architectural offices 51n4e (Brussels) and Point Supreme (Athens) have submitted the winning design for the new building. The Belgian-Greek duo succeeded in convincing the jury with a design that consists of 4 sustainable buildings that create a stimulating, flexible and innovative working environment. The proposal incorporates the individual character of the site, but also makes bold statements about the future. The new building is to become a home for artists: either in residence or visiting, on the eve of a breakthrough or with heaps of experience, or with a need for repose or a desire to produce, reflect or experiment. We hope it will also be a place where you will feel at home. The estimated time of completion is currently set for the spring of 2023.

Antonio Vega Macotela

The exhibition Incendio by Antonio Vega Macotela opens at CIAP (Hasselt) on Saturday October 5th. The project and the presentation are a collaboration between CIAP and FLACC, and form part of the Stadstriënnale Hasselt-Genk (Hasselt-Genk City Triennial). Incendio is a new chapter in the long-term project The Q'aquchas Ballade by Antonio Vega Macotela. The project explores the figure of a 'hacker' as an agent of political and social disruption, at a time when information constitutes the most valuable source of intelligence.

The series of tapestries shown at CIAP draws a parallel between the hacker group Nos del Abismo and the Q'aquchas, a gang of pirate miners who worked in the Bolivian mines in the 18th century when legitimate miners were obliged to rest. Whether extracting silver or mining data, both groups successfully use loopholes to undermine existing power structures and 'hack' the system.

Antonio Vega Macotela (b. 1980) is a multidisciplinary artist based between Mexico and Amsterdam, whose works have been exhibited internationally, most recently at Documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany and at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA.
