We hebben het genoegen u uit te nodigen voor de presentaties van Thomas Raat, Stian Ådlandsvik & Lutz-Rainer Müller. De presentaties zijn op zaterdag 27 juni bij FLACC, Andre Dumontlaan 2, 3600 Genk. De presentaties starten om 13.00 en we sluiten de dag om 16.00 af met een glas Noors bier.

Thomas Raat (NL)
Het project van Thomas Raat bij FLACC richt zich op de verspreiding van de modernistische beeldtaal. Deze experimentele beeldtaal, die voortkwam uit een kleine kring avant-gardisten, werd in de loop van de jaren vijftig en zestig conventioneel, doordat vele kunstenaars en vormgevers haar tot voorbeeld namen. Zo ontstond een kunsthistorische schemerzone van afgeleide stromingen en toepassingen. Raat neemt deze schemerzone, die zich uitstrekt van meubelontwerpen tot boekomslagen, als vertrekpunt. Middels een combinatie van citaten en nabootsingen simuleert Raat authentiek ogende, ‘modernistische’ beelden die zich lijken te positioneren op een omslagpunt. Het moment waarop het experimentele karakter van een radicale, nieuwe beeldtaal conventioneel wordt, het moment waarop de ‘avant garde’ huiselijk wordt.

Reflectie over hun samenwerking vormt een van de belangrijkste drijfveren voor hun expressie, zowel als duo en als individuele kunstenaars. Bij FLACC hebben zij hun samenwerking onderzocht aan de hand van een circulaire beweging. Een met de hand gegraven vorm van een schop werd gevuld met gips, om vervolgens in brons gegoten te worden. Deze enigszins blinde, voorzichtige manier van vormgeven is nauw verbonden met het idee van een handgemaakte hybride vorm die balanceert tussen artistieke gedachte en praktisch gebruik. De sterke mechanische arm van een graafmachine zal worden gebruikt om de schop bewegen, mogelijks om een landschap te veranderen of gewoon een gat te graven. Maar de graafmachine zal ook een tijdelijk soort drager zijn van de sculptuur die verder vorm krijgt doorheen de sporen van fysieke arbeid.

Biënnale van Venetië

Tijdens de Biënnale van Venetië worden een aantal landen vertegenwoordigd door kunstenaars die in het verleden bij FLACC hebben gewerkt. Pepo Salazar is een van de vijf kunstenaars die door Martí Manen zijn geselecteerd om Spanje te vertegenwoordigen. Nikita Kadan maakt deel uit van de Oekraïense groepshow, samengesteld door Björn Geldhof. Vincent Meessen vertegenwoordigt België met zijn project Personne et les Autres. Dit project zal centraal staan in zijn werkperiode bij FLACC, die later dit jaar plaatst vindt. Gluklya (Natalia Pershina-Yakimanskaya) heeft in 2010 bij FLACC haar project Utopian Unemployment Union (i.s.m. bolwerK) gerealiseerd. Zij is door Okwui Enwezor uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan All the World’s Futures.

In het off programm van de Biënnale is werk te zien van Renato Nicolodi en in de tentoonstelling van de Future Generation Art Prize van het Pinchuk Art Centre is werk te zien van Aslan Gaisumov. Deze laatste komt later dit jaar voor een project naar FLACC.

The project of Thomas focuses on the distribution of the modernistic visual language. This experimental visual language, which started in a small circle of avant gardist artists, became the conventional form in de fifties and sixties, because many artists and mainstream designers used it as examples for their own work. And thus a twilight of art historical derived movements and uses. Raat takes this twilight, which stresses from furniture design to book covers, as the starting point. Using a combination of quotations and imitations Raat simulates authentic looking “modernistic” images that position on the moment of the tipping point. The moment that the experimental new visual language becomes conventional, the moment that avant garde becomes homely.

Reflection upon their collaboration in itself becomes one of the core elements in their expression, both as a duo and as individual artists. At FLACC the artists researched their collaboration by using a circular motion. A hand dough form of a shovel was filled with plaster and used to make a bronze version. This somewhat blind way of tentatively shaping a sculpture would be closely connected to the idea of a handmade hybrid form that wavers between artistic thought and practical use. A digger’s strong mechanical arm will then be used to move the shovel, possibly altering a landscape or simply digging a hole. But the digger will also function as a temporary sort of carrier for the sculpture, shaping it further by affecting traces of physical work.

Venice Biennale

At the Venice Biennale, a number of countries are represented by artists who have worked at FLACC in the past. Pepo Salazar is one of the five artists selected by Martí Manen to represent Spain. Nikita Kadan is part of the Ukrainian group show curated by Björn Geldhof. Vincent Meessen represents Belgium with his project Personne et les Autres. This project will be central to his work period at FLACC, which takes place later this year. Gluklya (Natalia Pershina-Yakimanskaya) realized her project Utopian Unemployment Union at FLACC in 2010 (in collaboration with bolwerK). She has been invited by Okwui Enwezorui to participate in All the World's Futures.

The off programme of the Biennial presents work by Renato Nicolodi; work by Aslan Gaisumov is on view in the exhibition of the Future Generation Art Prize by the Pinchuk Art Centre. The latter will come to FLACC later this year to realize a project.
