Annelies Vaneycken

Binnen het werk van Vaneycken speelt reizen een prominente rol. Ze zoekt naar conflicten of knelpunten in culturen en maakt deze zichtbaar voor een groter publiek. Conflicten die enkel ten ore komen als je fysiek aanwezig bent op die plekken. Alleen door een direct contact met de bewoners komen deze conflicten naar voren. Ze reist daarom naar de favela’s in Brazilië, maar ook naar herdersgemeenschappen in de Pyreneeën.

Maar wat als dit reizen tijdelijk onmogelijk is? Hoe kun je dan op een betekenisvolle manier omgaan met de informatie en ervaringen die je hebt? Ze onderzoekt het conflict tussen de dagelijkse sleur van het leven, het vergankelijke, verstilling, immobiliteit en de altijd aanwezige honger naar innovatie en vooruitgang aan de hand van de reizen die ze in de laatste tien jaar heeft gemaakt. Ze trekt hierbij een parallel met Odysseus, die na zijn overwinning op Troje een 10-jarige reis naar huis maakt. Een tocht vol avonturen waarin hij menselijker wordt. Hoe kun je hier een ordering in aanbrengen om er een soort essentie uit te halen? Hoe beïnvloedt de reis jou als persoon? Ze poogt door een aantal ordeningsystemen in haar boek te combineren tot een essentie te komen waarom haar jeugdreizen haar zo gevormd hebben. Hiermee wil ze de vraag beantwoorden waarom reizen zo belangrijk is in haar praktijk als kunstenaar en hoe ze hier mee om kan gaan op het moment dat ze minder kan reizen.

Chloé Dierckx - De Onbekende Invloed

Waardoor ontstaan de verschillen tussen het voorspelde weer en het daadwerkelijke weer? Samen met een klas schoolkinderen onderzocht Dierckx deze vraag door 3 maanden lang elke schooldag te zoeken naar de onbekende invloed, die het verschil tussen het voorspelde weer en het daadwerkelijke weer kon verklaren. Temperatuur, bewolking, neerslag en luchtvochtigheid werden door de kinderen minutieus gemeten en genoteerd en vergeleken met de weersvoorspelling. De kinderen dachten na over de oorzaak van de verschillen, over de seizoenen en het weer. Het project kreeg een extra verdieping door lessen over het weer, met proefjes en andere experimenten. De fantasie van de kinderen werd geprikkeld om mogelijke onbekende invloeden te achterhalen en werd gekaderd door de wetenschappelijke benadering van Dierckx. Zo verbindt ze het artistieke en het wetenschappelijke.

Dierckx zoekt in haar werk naar manieren om een ordering aan te brengen in het ongrijpbare, in een poging om het te begrijpen. Statistiek speelt een belangrijke rol om de ordening te realiseren. In “The Story of an Air Bubble” creëert ze een luchtbel die doormiddel van gesprekken, posters en andere communicatiemiddelen een verspreiding over de hele wereld krijgt. De statistische verwerking van de data over de verspreiding speelt hierbij een belangrijke rol. De luchtbel blijft ondanks alle aandacht een luchtbel, dwz zonder reële waarde. De nominale waarde stijgt echter, waarmee de luchtbel steeds groter wordt en daarmee bijdraagt aan de eigenheid van de luchtbel. In “Herstappe (Creating Perfect Unity)” voert ze een statistische analyse uit op de alledaagse gekleurde objecten in het gelijknamige dorp, om vervolgens de perfectie eenheid te bereiken door een aantal objecten in een andere kleur te verven. Op een vergelijkbare manier spelen de metingen in “De Onbekende Invloed” een belangrijke rol; het is een manier om de onbekende invloed te benaderen, in een poging om het te kunnen begrijpen.

Travel plays a prominent role in the work of Vaneycken. She identifies conflicts or problems in particular cultures and makes them visible to a larger audience. Conflicts one only learns about when physically present in the places they affect, and through direct contact with the local inhabitants in the conflict area. Her travels, in this way, have taken her from the favelas in Brazil, to the pastoral communities in the Pyrenees.

But what if travel is temporarily made impossible? How can one deal in a meaningful way with the information and experiences one has? The artist explores the conflict between the daily grind of life, transience, quietude, immobility, and the ever-present hunger for innovation and progress, on the basis of the trips she has made in the last ten years. She draws a parallel with Odysseus, who after his victory over Troy took a 10-year journey home. A journey full of adventures that, if anything, made him more human. How can any kind of order be brought to this experience, its essence made apparent? How does the journey affect one as a person? The artist, in her book, tries to combine a number of ordering systems in an attempt to understand in what way, and to what extent, her childhood travels have shaped her. In this way, she tries to answer the question why travel is so important in her practice as an artist and, similarly, how she can approach this given when she will have ceased travelling, temporarily or otherwise.

Chloé Dierckx - De Onbekende Invloed

What causes the differences between the predicted weather and the actual weather? Together with a class of schoolchildren, Dierckx investigated this question. During a three month-period, she set out, every school day, in search of the unknown effect that could possibly explain the difference between the predicted weather and the actual weather. Temperature, cloudiness, precipitation and humidity were meticulously measured by the children and recorded and compared to the forecast. The children reflected upon the cause of the differences, the seasons, and the weather. The project was given extra depth with a number of lessons about the weather, with fun tests and other experiments. Stimulating the imagination of the children, this activity encouraged them to try to identify the possibly unknown influences. Dierckx’ scientific approach provided the framework for the project, in this way bringing together the artistic and the scientific.

Dierckx, in her work, sets out to find ways to bring order in the Elusive, in an attempt to understand it. Statistics play an important role in creating order. In “The Story of an Air Bubble”, she creates an air bubble that is disseminated throughout the world through talks, posters, and other means of communication. The statistical processing of the data on the dissemination plays an important role. The bubble, despite all of the attention, remains a bubble, i.e., without any real value. The nominal value, however, steadily increases, expanding the bubble and in this way contributing to its uniqueness. In “Herstappe (Creating Perfect Unity)”, she performs a statistical analysis on everyday coloured objects in the eponymous village, to then create a perfect unity by painting a number of objects in a different colour. In a similar way, the readings in “The Unknown Influence” play an important role; they constitute a way through which the unknown influence can be approached, in an attempt to understand it.
