How did you get inside my house (2013)

Het sterk sculpturaal werk van Daan Gielis (BE, 1988) is in eerste instantie lastig te duiden, het laat in eerste blik weinig los en heeft tijd nodig heeft om te bezinken. Langzaamaan ontvouwt er zich een atmosfeer en kom je tot de kern van het werk; persoonlijke sleutelmomenten of sferen uit diverse subculturen en de film-, literatuur- en kunstgeschiedenis. Hij abstraheert tot een kern en speelt met subtiliteiten. De opgezette atmosfeer wordt versterkt door de relatie en het spel met de architecturale omgeving en andere aanwezige objecten. In recent werk treedt deze samenwerking steeds verder naar de voorgrond.

Gielis komt tot een sfeer door conventies en modellen uit bijvoorbeeld de filmwereld te analyseren en deze te vertalen naar beeldende elementen. Aan de hand van een onbewuste herkenning van die elementen worden we geduwd in de opgezette richting of sfeer die subtiel en met veel aandacht voor materiaal wordt opgebouwd. Gielis maakt hiervoor gebruik van eenvoudige materialen, zoals staal, glas, hout, licht en geluid waarbij hun betekenis wordt ontleedt. Door het vertrek vanuit deze betekenislagen wordt het werk sterk persoonlijk, maar heeft het door de abstractie tegelijk ook een heel universeel karakter.

Hij werkt met terugkerende vormen en motieven, waarbij steeds verder tot de kern wordt gekomen. Om dezelfde reden worden bestaande werken aangepast aan nieuwe ruimtelijke situaties en wordt er in andere combinaties opgesteld, waardoor deze steeds aan betekenis winnen. Dat is de kracht van Gielis; het blijven doorontwikkelen en verder zoeken naar subtiliteiten om het werk zo steeds sterker te maken.

8 december: presentatie installatie Kaleb de Groot en discussiemoment Stijn Van Dorpe en Robbrecht Desmet.

Zondag 8 december presenteert Kaleb de Groot zijn installatie “Barricade, Demo’. Een nieuwe serie opblaasbare sculpturen, geproduceerd in nauwe samenwerking met FLACC, worden gecombineerd met handgemaakte bouwmaterialen. Startpunt voor de installatie is de vraag “Als opstand en creativiteit individuele krachten zijn, waarom ontbreekt er bij de hedendaagse barricades dan een intentionele esthetiek?” ‘Barricade, Demo” is een try out voor een actie, dan wel barricade, en zal in de toekomst in het publieke domein gepresenteerd worden als theaterstuk en als interventie.

Op dezelfde dag is er een discussiemoment rond de gezamenlijke werkperiode van Stijn Van Dorpe en Robbrecht Desmet, waar ze ingaan op de methodiek van hun samenwerking. Op uitnodiging van Van Dorpe en Desmet introduceren ROTOR architects en kunstenaars Nico Docx, Sirah Foighel Brutmann & Eitan Efrat en Achim Lengerer hun samenwerkingsmodellen, waarbij gezocht wordt naar de overlap of gemeenschappelijke kenmerken met de kunstpraktijk van Van Dorpe en Desmet.

De scenografie is doorlopend te bezoeken. Het discussiemoment is van 13.00 tot 18.00 en de voertaal is Engels. Reserveren via info@flacc.info is gewenst. De locatie is FLACC, Andre Dumontlaan 2, 3600 Genk.

The highly sculptural work of Daan Gielis (BE, 1988) initially seems difficult to interpret, revealing very little at first glance, and requiring time to settle in the viewer’s mind. Gradually, an atmosphere manifests itself, revealing the essence of the work; private key moments or scenes taken from various subcultures and film, literature and art history. His abstraction seeks to uncover the essence and plays with subtleties. The created atmosphere is enhanced by the relationship and the play with the architectural environment and other existing objects. In more recent work, this interaction is increasingly brought to the fore.

Gielis creates an atmosphere through an analysis of conventions and models from, for example, the world of film, which are then translated into visual elements. Through the unconscious recognition of these elements, the viewer is led into the preconceived direction or atmosphere that has been constructed with much subtlety and great attention to material. Gielis, to this end, uses simple materials –steel, glass, wood, light and sound – whose meaning he analyses in depth. The work, based on these layers of meaning, takes on a highly personal flair, yet the applied abstraction simultaneously gives it a very universal character.

He works with recurring shapes and motifs in an on-going process of reduction aimed at uncovering the essence of the object. This is also why existing works are adapted to new spatial situations or placed in different compositions, thereby gaining in significance. This, precisely, is the power of Gielis; his continued development of the work, his search for subtleties, all in function of creating increasingly stronger work.

December 8: presentation of the installation by Kaleb de Groot and discussion moment with Stijn Van Dorpe and Robbrecht Desmet.

Kaleb de Groot presents his installation “Barricade, Demo” on Sunday, December 8. A new series of inflatable sculptures, produced in close collaboration with FLACC, are combined with handmade materials. The starting point for the installation is the question “If rebellion and creativity are individual forces, why do in today's barricades lack an intentional aesthetic?" “Barricade, Demo” is a try-out for an action, or a barricade, and will, in the future, be presented in the public domain as a theatre piece and an intervention.

On the same day, there will be a discussion moment on the joint work period of Stijn Van Dorpe and Robbrecht Desmet, in which they discuss the methodology of their collaboration. Upon the invitation of Van Dorpe and Desmet, ROTOR architects and artists Nico Docx, Sirah Foighel Brutmann & Eitan Efrat and Achim Lengerer introduce their collaborative models, which explore the overlap between, or common characteristics with, the art practices of Van Dorpe and Desmet.

The scenography can be visited throughout the day. The discussion moment will be held from 1 to 6 p.m., the official language is English. Reservation is requested; please make reservations through info@flacc.info. The location is FLACC, Andre Dumontlaan 2, 3600 Genk.
