FLACC schept als werkplaats voor beeldende kunstenaars de organisatorische, inhoudelijke en technische voorwaarden om een aantal unieke kunstenaarsprojecten te realiseren. Daartoe selecteert de organisatie jaarlijks maximaal tien kunstenaars - uit binnen- en buitenland, jong en ervaren - om een nieuw project op te zetten. We zoeken hierbij een evenwicht tussen creatie- en onderzoeksprojecten en kunstenaars die concreter aan de slag gaan met de historische, geografische of sociale context van het centrum.

De oproep voor een werkplaatsproject is open voor alle beeldende kunstenaars. Door de diversiteit van onze werkplaatsen is de oproep gericht naar projecten in diverse media en disciplines. Vanaf 2013 gaat FLACC een meerjarig onderzoek starten, waarbij de veranderende artistieke arbeid als uitgangspunt wordt genomen, om via een historische analyse van het kunstenaarschap te onderzoeken. De analyse van het kunstenaarschap wordt als basis genomen voor de centrale vraag: is de kunstenaarswerkplaats in zijn huidige vorm nog het meest geschikte instrument om de artistieke productie te ondersteunen. De open call is enkel open voor projecten die ingaan op deze en onderstaande thematiek, namelijk de ontwikkeling van kunstenaarsrollen, de wisselwerking tussen lokale beeldtradities en het internationaal kunstenveld en als laatste de verschuivende productiemethodes en –technieken (met specifieke aandacht voor ambacht en hightech).

Het kunstenaarschap heeft in de moderne tijden een turbulente ontwikkeling doorgemaakt; de historische evolutie van kunstenaarsopleiding in het atelier (leerling) van een meester naar het ontstaan van de academie met het losweken van het kunstenaarschap van de ambachtelijkheid, met aandacht voor het conceptuele (vrije kunsten) tot de geacademiseerde kunstenaar en creatief ondernemer. Door deze ontwikkeling zijn ook de kunstenaarsrollen veranderd: van de mystificering van de kunstenaar als excentriek genie tot vercommercialiseerd beleggingsmiddel,van visionair tot 9-tot-5-werker. Kunstenaars die deze historische rollen en modellen onderzoeken, in vraag stellen hoe verre deze nog actueel zijn of ze koppelen aan contemporaine kunstenaarsmodellen (die vaak een gedeeltelijk overname of aanpassing van de historische concepten zijn) of alternatieve modellen ontwikkelen, worden gevraagd een projectvoorstel in te dienen. Hierbij wordt ook naar de voedende kracht van deze oude modellen gekeken (relevantie, zinvolheid, kwaliteit, etc.).

Buiten Europa ligt de relatie tussen contemporaine productie / discours en ambacht, beeldtraditie in relatie tot identiteit, vaak anders. Dit kan leiden tot een contaminatie van de lokale beeldtraditie door invloeden van het internationale kunstenveld of tot een verrijking van de het kunstendiscours. In de hedendaagse ontwikkeling van een "glokale" kunstwereld, waarin lokaal en globaal steeds meer verweven worden, komen beeldtalen en -tradities steeds meer samen, waarbij de eigen achtergrond of identiteit van de kunstenaar samensmelt met het globale kunstendiscour. De wisselwerking tussen de lokale beeldtraditie en een internationaal kunstenveld en de reactie hierop kunnen worden bevraagd in een projectvoorstel voor deze open call.

Er is een hernieuwde interesse in ambachtelijke werkwijzen en disciplines, die voorheen als perifeer en minder belangrijk werden geacht (keramiek, hout, glas, houtsnede, etc). Deze hernieuwde interesse valt samen met een herdefiniëring van manueel werk, ambacht, from scratch, binnen het veld van de eigentijdse media (laptopontwerp, hightech…). Het wordt vaak gebruikt door kunstenaars die historische materialen en technieken combineren met hedendaagse technieken en modellen, om zo tot een nieuwe werkwijze en beeldtaal te komen, om zo tot een zoektocht naar oorspronkelijkheid in de kunst, authenticiteit en eigen vertrekpunten te komen. De open call is specifiek open voor kunstenaars die deze modellen bevragen, dan wel de combinatie van high- en lowtech onderzoeken.

De werkperiode is 3 maanden fulltime of ongeveer 90 dagen verdeeld over de periode januari 2013 tot december 2013. FLACC biedt, naast technische, inhoudelijk en organisatorische begeleiding, de kunstenaars een accommodatie, een werkplaats, reiskostenvergoeding en een klein productie budget.

Presentatie

De resultaten van de werkperiodes van alle kunstenaars worden eind 2013 gepresenteerd bij een internationale projectpartner.

Aanvraagprocedure

Om een aanvraag in te dienen, vragen wij u om het aanvraagformulier en het excel sheet (vul het budget in) te gebruiken. De aanvraag moet bestaan uit een uitgebreid projectvoorstel, een nauwkeurig gecalculeerd budget, een (voorkeurs)werkperiode en C.V (in woord en beeld).

As a workplace for visual artists, FLACC creates the organizational, technical and artistic conditions for the realization of original artists’ projects. To this end every year the organization selects a maximum of ten artists – from Belgium and abroad, young and experienced - to set up a new project. In so doing the organization endeavours to strike a balance between creative and research projects and artists who focus more specifically on the centre’s historical, geographic or social context.

Open Call

Who: visual artists working in a variety of media and disciplines are invited to submit project proposals along the lines set out below.
Where: FLACC, Genk in Belgium
When: a continuous period of three months, or approximately 90 days spread over different periods between January 2013 and December 2013
Deadline: 1 March 2012

The call is open to all visual artists. Owing to the diversity of our workshops, the application is open for projects in various media and disciplines. In 2013 FLACC is launching a research programme lasting several years. It will take changing artistic ‘labour’ as its starting point and study the artistic calling by means of a historical analysis. That analysis will be taken as the basis for the central question: is the artists’ workplace in its present form still the most appropriate instrument to support artistic production. The open call only invites projects which respond to this and the following themes, namely the development of artists’ roles, the interaction between local visual traditions and the international arts field and, lastly, changing production methods and techniques (paying special attention to old artisanal crafts and high technology).

The artistic calling has changed dramatically, evolving from an apprentice’s artistic training in the master’s workshop to the creation of academies with the gradual detachment of artistry from craftsmanship, through conceptual (free arts) to the academicized artist and creative entrepreneur. As a result the role of artists has also changed: from the mystification of the artist as an eccentric genius to commercialized investment, from visionary to 9-to-5-worker. Project proposals are invited from artists who research these historic roles and models, question their relevance today or link them to contemporary artists’ models (which often partly borrow from or adapt historical concepts) or develop alternative models. That proposal will also look at the sustaining force of these old models (relevance, significance, quality, etc.).

The relationship between contemporary production/discourse and craft, and visual tradition in relation to identity is often different outside Europe. This can result in the local visual tradition being contaminated by influences from the international arts field or to an enrichment of the artistic discourse. In the contemporary development of a ‘glocal’ art world in which local and global are ever more interwoven, visual languages and traditions increasingly converge, so that the artist’s own background and identity merge with the global artistic discourse. A project proposal for this open call might examine this interaction between the local visual tradition and an international arts field and the reaction to it.

There is renewed interest in artisanal methods of working and disciplines, which were previously deemed peripheral and less important (ceramics, wood, glass, woodcuts, etc). This renewed interest coincides with a redefining of manual work, crafts, working from scratch, within the field of contemporary media (laptop design, high tech, etc.). It is often used by artists who combine historical materials and techniques with contemporary techniques and models to arrive at a new way of working and visual language, so as to then go in search of originality in art, authenticity and new points of departure. The open call welcomes artists who explore these models or who research the combination of high and low tech.

The work period is three months fulltime or approximately 90 days spread over the period January 2013 to December 2013. As well as technical, organizational and artistic support, FLACC offers the artists a workplace, accommodation, travel expenses and a small production budget.

Presentation

The results of all the artists’ work periods will be presented to an international project partner at the end of 2013.
