SOLIDARNOŚĆ CAMP IN BRUSSELS
Solidarność Camp in Brussels
Grzegrorz Klaman, invited by FLACC for a workplaceproject, comes to Brussels with Solidarność Camp. Solidarity Camp refers to the formation of the union in 1980 and the impact of this to the communist rule. Five sheds of the Gdansk shipyard are, on initiative of the artist Grzegorz Klaman, on tour in five European cities as Solidarność Camp. Made decades ago by the builders, they were meant to protect them against the harsh working conditions in the open air in the heavy industries of shipbuilding. The workers were able to meet each other outside normal working conditions and could relax, but they also talked about politics. From these meetings, the solidarity movement began, which eventually the communist regime overthrew. Today, no longer in use, they are saved from the scrap yard and are considered examples of vernacular.
During Solidarity Camp Wyspa Institute of Art Gdansk and Nowy Teatr in Warsaw organises together with FLACC a debate on Tuesday, September 27 at 20h00. The questions we would like to raise is how the meaning of the object is changing according to the location? What does it mean for us to discover them in the very center of Brussels? How their materiality influences our thinking about the visual, the vernacular, the somatic, the audible and the performative? How this gesture reframes what we think about the city and how the contrast between the sheds and i their temporary surrounding triggers our thinking about the status of the found and vernacular? How the sheds can sound politically to us, whilst thinking about the control over heavy industry by European regulations? These questions and more are to be addressed by the speakers. Invited to participate: Grzegorz Klaman (artist), Stef van Bellingen (director Warp), Luuk Nouwen
(artistic director FLACC),Arne Hendricks (co-curator next Alternative in Gdansk), Aneta Szylak (director Wyspa Gdansk), Gideon Boie (BAVO), Bart Verschaffel (University Ghent).
Solidarity Camp is a project developed in collaboration between Wyspa Institute of Art in Gdansk and Warsaw Teatr Nowy in the context of the cultural program of the Polish presidency of the European Union.
The discussion will take place on Tuesday, September 27th, 20h00. More info on site.
