FLACC
workplace for visual artistsNICO DOCKX IN FLACC
A dummy / a book
From his operating base in Antwerp Nico Dockx (1974, Ekeren) travels around the world, developing his work out of past encounters and experiences. His constantly growing library of memories and data is being created by (re)acting to the spatial and social context, often in a dialogue with his surroundings. This continuous process results in installations, objects, soundscapes, texts, videos, etc. Recently Nico Dockx participated in Manifesta 7, Bolzano, MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, Kunstverein Hannover. He also developed the project Rainbox Audio Transformation for Extra City in Antwerp.
For some time Nico Dockx has been working on a publication that captures ten years of artistic practice. A regular description or catalogue would not suffice to illustrate the many-sidedness and complexity of the artist's practice. His ever-changing and evolving archives of experiences and interpretations compel the artist to evaluate and rearrange his work constantly. The artist has decided to create the book in an interactive way, which is in keeping with the co-operative character of his work. At the beginning of 2009 Dockx is going to present a functional dummy. This beta version of the final book will allow for new additions or layers which may lead up to a representative end result. The publication and the underlying investigation are carried out in cooperation with Thomas Boutoux, Valerie Chartrain, Catherine Chevalier, Lieve Laporte and Jan Mast. It is a joint project with LIGHTMACHINE and FLACC.
On Saturday 20 September the artist organizes a private workshop in FLACC with a number of experts who will discuss the structure, the contents and the method of the book. It will be followed by an informal dinner at which everyone is welcome. Please let us know if you wish to attend by sending a mail to flacc@skynet.be. You can also reach us at 089 84 52 23. On the occasion of this event the artist will also present a new edition.

LECTURE MARK KENT
This spring Mark Kent (1972, Cork, Ireland) developed and presented the sculpture 'Industrial Sound Recordings from Gemaal'. The artist created the work based on sound coordinates he registered at various locations in the Euregion. The result is a modular monument, that is put together in various forms, conform the respective sound recordings. Earlier this year the work was exhibited in AINCI Maastricht, IKOB Eupen, the Kraftcentrale Alsdorf and near C-Mine, Genk. The project was co-ordinated by FLACC within the framework of Gemaal, a cultural collaboration in the Euregion between the cities of Genk, Eupen, Maastricht en Alsdorf and is financially supported by the European Community (Interreg III). On Saturday 27 September the artist will give a lecture in FLACC, during which he will look back at the project and also discuss his earlier work.
For the occasion of the project a work is published containing an essay by Maria Jönsson.
