HECTOR ZAMORA IN FLACC

Hector Zamora
Uma Boa Ordem, Hector Zamora ism Lucia Koch, Sao Paulo Biennale 2006

In July, Hector Zamora (1974, Mexico City, Mexico) will reside in Genk. Unlike most projects FLACC sets up, this artist is selected to leave behind a permanent trace in the city. FLACC and the city of Genk have given Zamora the assignment to create a permanent feature at C-Mine. The former mine complex in Winterslag is currently in scaffolding, as it was recently decided to transform it into a site for culture, tourism and creative economy.
In earlier projects like Paracaidista at the ‘Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil’ (Mexico City) and Subtraction/Addition in the ‘Antioquia Museum of Art’, Medellín (Colombia), Zamora forges a social link between the institute and its immediate surroundings. The 'Paracaidista' is a monumental parasite attached to the outside wall of the museum, which was inhabited for three months. In Medellin Zamora occupies the administrative spaces of the museum, which is located in the city's red light district. Assisted by local prostitutes he creates the autonomous bar Las Divas. In Genk Zamora also intends to start a dialogue between the refurbished mine site and the multicoloured Vennestraat. The artist continually creates spatial experiences based on geometrical structures. The functionality of space and current economic considerations are guiding principles in his work. In 2006 work by Hector Zamora was presented at the Biennales of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Busan (South Korea) and Havana (Cuba). This autumn FLACC has planned a lecture by the Mexican artist on his project.

ALIEN OOSTING IN FLACC

During the summer, Alien Oosting (1978, Meppel, the Netherlands) will work for a considerable length of time in FLACC, mainly on the Waterschei mine site. Similar to her previous interventions, the artist starts from a specific location. Traces in the vacant building, complemented by subtle interventions, form the starting point for a scrutiny of matter. With her camera Oosting documents elements of visual decay, colours and structure. She creates a visual story in which details of the existing situation and small actions are fused. In the end, the study crystallizes into a presentation on the transition from objective to subjective experience of space, distance and time. Simultaneousness is an important theme of her presentation, which will take place on Saturday 22 September in the mine building.
Alien Oosting studied at the University and the Academy of Visual Arts of Maastricht and earlier created spatial interventions in Sittard, Genk, Loppem, Maastricht, Heerlen, Brussels, Dalfsen and Berlin. More information can be found at www.alienoosting.com.

COLLABORATION FRANS MASEREEL CENTRUM AND FLACC

Following the collaboration with the Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht), FLACC will also start a structural collaboration with the Frans Masereel Centrum Centrum (Kasterlee). The starting point for this collaboration will be the use of complementary facilities and the exchange of expertise in the field of analogue and digital graphical productions. Inventories will be drawn up and annual investment plans will be tuned to one another.
