NEWS LETTER February - March 2007

In 2007 the first artist to start in FLACC is Jimmy Robert (1975, Guadeloupe). The versatile artist will not develop a temporary and well-defined project in the centre, but has promised a year-long commitment made up of frequent yet short spells of work. In Genk Robert is to create sculptures, prints, installations as well as performances in which he will be studying the relationship between dance and the visual arts. Besides setting up a public film programme, he will also develop more intimate visual moments. The first presentation is planned for Thursday 8 March at 7 p.m. in FLACC. For this event Jimmy Robert has invited dancer Werner Nigg (1978, Switzerland) to develop a choreography together, based on a fragile metal sculpture. In the performance, titled Metallica, the dancer's body follows the forms, layers, lines and folds of the object. The piece will be performed in the metal workshop where the metal sheets were folded to achieve their final shape, commenting at once on masculinity and the idea of work force versus fragility, manual labour against mannerism.
Jimmy Robert studied at Goldsmiths’ College (London), was a resident artist at the Rijksacademie (Amsterdam) and recently showed his work at the Tate Britain (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris) and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Recently the artist moved to live in Brussels.

COLLABORATION JAN VAN EYCK ACADEMIE – FLACC
These past few months the Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht, the Netherlands) and FLACC have been engaged in a collaboration in the field of research and support of projects that are being developed within the institutions' curricula. From now on, the workshop facilities and technical expertise will be shared for the realisation of productions. The Jan van Eyck Academie will also offer free admission to its library and documentation centre. The organisations have drawn up a joint inventory of all their facilities and know-how, and will exchange their yearly facilitary investment plans. The institutions are also setting up a joint database for external expertise, which will be valuable and usable for the realization of productions. FLACC and the Jan van Eyck Academie aim at complementarity regarding facilities and expertise and a cross-border dynamism between residing artists/researchers. The organisations wish to extend this cooperation, preferably at the Euro-regional level.CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: FILM BY SUE DE BEER

HOLODECK CONVENTION
The temporary collective that Geert Goiris set up last year, together with Jean Bernard Koeman and (Jens de Schutter, Piet Mertens and Wim Waelput) also met in Genk last week. Their collaboration has evolved into a longer-term project in which the artists regularly get together, for a week at a time. At these 'conventions' they present new findings to one another and FLACC organises an intensive programme tailored to reflect their joint research. Holodecka reference to the Enterprise-D in Star Trek, was the initial starting-point of their quest, in which the artists explore the empirical power of space and image. Last week the artists visited the Europlanetarium and separately invited guest artist Koen Deprez and art philosopher Francis Smets to think along with them for a day. On those occasions they visited five different types of water towers, in association with the Flemish Water Distribution Company. Visuals of their recent meeting can be found here.FLACC: EXTRA MUROS
