FLACC
workplace for visual artists
Jon Mikel Euba

In recent years, most of the work produced by Jon Mikel Euba (b. 1967,
Bilbao) has been the result of an unusual model of collaboration. For
example, his recent works for the Busan Biennale (Korea, 2004) and the 9de Biennale of Istanbul (Turkey, 2005) were produced in a workshop which he
organised on site at each venue. In FLACC too, Euba will create a new video
production with the aid of a small dozen volunteers, in the space of seven
days. And once again, his starting point will be the individual capacities
of a limited number of contributors. Euba's residence in Genk is therefore
both a call and an invitation to take part in this fascinating experience.
'One Week, Two Horses, Three Cameras' will start on Saturday 25 November
with a lecture by the artist, in which he will talk about his earlier works
and explain the idea behind the Genk project. On 27 and 28 November, Euba is
presenting a film programme at FLACC. Drawing from films by Fassbinder,
Godard, Warhol, Beuys and others, he will analyse, together with the
audience, a few historical case studies and strategies. The actual work will
be created in the course of the next two days, with the group of volunteers
formed over the week. The title – ‘One Week, Two Horses, Three Cameras’ – contains the three preconditions of the new creation.
Jon Mikel Euba's work consists of photographs, videos, words and drawings in
which he places people in indeterminate situations and stages strange
incidents. The artist is mainly interested in the construction of the image
and its potential of creating simultaneous but different narratives. In this
manner, he develops a highly personal and contemporary cinematographic
idiom.
