GEERT GOIRIS
Geert Goiris
Geert Goiris (1971, Bornem) is a regular user of the digital studio and an artist whom FLACC has been fostering for quite some time. That is why FLACC will be organising a closed workshop in Genk, in consultation with Goiris. Vincent Lamouroux (1974, Saint Germain-en-Laye, France), Jean Bernard Koeman (1964, Antwerp) and HAP (1999, Aalst): the group of artists Jens De Schutter (1979, Aalst), Piet Mertens (1978, Lokeren) and Wim Waelput (1979, Gent) will reflect on their work together with the photographer, and investigate different possibilities of form and presentation. The starting point is a statement by the Scottish 'walking artist' Hamish Fulton: 'An object cannot compete with an experience'. As a 'temporary collective', their aim is to explore, starting from shared interests and references, to what extent they can restore the image, today, to its former autonomous status. Or, to rephrase it as a question: how does the image actually create an experience, apart from the original message or messenger? These six artists from France, Belgium and the Netherlands share an avid interest in science fiction, utopian architectural projects, minimal and land art, scenography and travel. For building the ultimate holodeck of their dreams (a holodeck is a virtual environment simulator in Star Trek), they can count on the know-how and expertise of professional specialists in pure cinema magic (movie matte-painting), special effects, dioramas and set design. In autumn, the artists' collective will present the results of the workshop to the public. A separate invitation will be sent out.

GEERT GOIRIS - EXHIBITION
Works by Geert Goiris that were created in FLACC are currently part of the following shows: Free-state, in the former Military Hospital in Ostend & ING, Wapenplein, Ostend - Le grand café, Centre d'art contemporain, Saint Nazaire, France - Urban Gallery, Marseille, France.

GEERT GOIRIS -WORKSHOP & PUBLICATION
During the summer, Geert Goiris will also give two intensive workshops in FLACC to a group of selected photography students of the Brussels Sint-Lukas Hogeschool. The results of these working sessions will be incorporated in Philosophy of Photography by Henri Van Lier. This publication, in English, is an initiative of the Lieven Gevaert Centrum and is due to appear in the course of 2007.

GREGG SMITH - EXHIBITION
On Friday 7 July, an exhibition opened at FRAC 'Le Plateau' in Paris, featuring The End, a video installation that Gregg Smith (b. 1970, Cape Town, South Africa) realised at FLACC in spring. The show runs until 20 August at FRAC (Fonds régional d'art contemporain) d'Île de France, Le Plateau.

KICK OFF
At the end of June 2006, FLACC selected six artists newly graduated from Flemish art academies: Samira El Khadraoui (Sint-Lukas, Brussels - Fine Arts), Fara Haesevoets (MDA, Genk - Photography), Philip Janssens (KASKA, Antwerp - In Situ³), Hilke Muyldermans (Sint-Lukas, Brussels - Fine Arts), Joris Perdieus (Sint-Lukas, Brussels - Fine Arts), Frederik Van Sinaey (KASK, Ghent - Visual Arts & Installation). They are offered a studio and a grant enabling them to work in Genk for a year, starting in September 2006. In consultation with the artists, FLACC is currently investigating how best to organise their individual support. During the annual Open House of FLACC, new work by the six selected artists will be shown from 19 to 21 January 2007.
