may 2007: Over a period of two years Stefan Serneels (1968,Wilrijk) has worked in FLACC on the short movie Hikikomori Style. The title refers to a contemporary Japanese phenomenon: young people locking themselves up in their rooms for years to escape from harsh reality. They spend their time gaming and surfing on the Internet. Serneels built a domestic setting in Genk for an absurd and minimalistic theatre in which the character performs everyday actions repetitively and at high speed. On Friday 25 May FLACC organizes the first presentation of Hikikomori Style. After the short movie the related Quadrat I & II (1982) and FILM (1965) by Samuel Beckett will be shown, followed by a discussion. Guests Inge Braeckman, Tom Liekens, Bart Serneels and Bart Van Dijck will talk with the artist about his work and sources of inspiration. The evening will be moderated by exhibition producer and Doctor in the Arts Johan Pas.
