Helen Dowling

Working primarily in video and video installation, Helen Dowling creates experiences in which the meaning of images morph, unsettle, and resist single definition. She is concerned with representation and the emotive and sensual modalities that result from moving image and sound on a primal, social and historical scale. In her work, she incorporates a variety of visual resources ranging from self-produced scenes and audio to found footage, poetry, and music to name a few. As both an artist and consumer of images, she often chooses to incorporate amateur and professional imagery, cherishing mistakes such as camera shakes or unintended sounds, relishing postproduction, and effects that pull and push the content into different visual and aural registers.

Helen Dowling (1982, GB) lives and works in Delft (NL) and Brussels (BE). She studied at Goldsmiths and Slade School of Fine Arts in London, after which she did residencies with, amongst others, Rose Residency Programme with MAMbo (IT), Fondazione Antonio Ratti (IT) and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (NL). Recent presentations of her works include Something for the Ivory, Villa Delle Rose, with MAMbo (solo, 2021, IT); tegenboschvanvreden, Loop (2020, SP); Open Skies, Wiels, Brussels (2019, BE); Stranger on display, GEM, The Hague (solo, 2019, NL); Whatever's there, tegenboschvanvreden, Amsterdam (solo, 2017, NL); Cities at the Center for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (2017, UK); Physical Fiction at the Garage in Rotterdam (2016, NL); Che il vero possa confutare il falso at Palazzo Pubblico, Santa Maria della Scala, Accademia Fisiocritici, Siena (2016, IT); Dark Palms at Studio Amaro, Naples (2016, IT) and Close-Up – A new generation of film and video artists in the Netherlands, EYE Film Museum, Amsterdam, (2016, NL). Since 2020, she has been a research fellow at Sint Lucas Antwerp.
